Introducing Donut Day and the Park Slope Scholarship Fund

5 min read

A sweet little celebration with a bigger dream behind it.

There are few things King Chomper loves more than a good snack.

So when National Donut Day came around, we had only one reasonable choice:

We had to celebrate.

On Friday, June 5th from 10 AM–3 PM, Story Time Chess is teaming up with our neighbors at 7th Ave Donuts & Diner for a very sweet day at our Park Slope club. Families can stop by for free donuts, say hello, and pick up a free first chess lesson ticket for a child who is new to Story Time Chess.

It’s going to be silly, welcoming, delicious, and very us.

But Donut Day is also the beginning of something we care about deeply.

We’re using the day to launch the Park Slope Scholarship Fund, a company-administered fund that will help local families access reduced-cost Story Time Chess lessons at our Park Slope club.

Why we’re starting this fund

Story Time Chess was built around a simple idea:

Children can learn big things when the world feels playful, imaginative, and kind.

In our lessons, kids aren’t just memorizing how pieces move. They’re meeting King Chomper, helping Queen Allegra solve problems, learning how to be brave with King Shaky, and discovering that chess can be a place for focus, creativity, confidence, and joy.

And we want more families to have access to that experience.

Park Slope is our home. Our club is part of the neighborhood. Families walk by our windows every day. Kids peek inside. Parents ask questions. Some families are ready to jump right into weekly lessons. Others would love to join, but need a little help making it possible.

That’s what this fund is for.

How the Park Slope Scholarship Fund will help

The Park Slope Scholarship Fund will help provide reduced-cost lessons for local families at our Park Slope club.

When someone contributes to the fund, that money will be used to lower the cost of lessons for families who may not otherwise be able to participate.

Support will be awarded by Story Time Chess based on family need, available funds, and program capacity.

Our hope is simple: more children get to walk into Chesslandia, sit down at the board, meet our characters, and discover what they’re capable of.

A contribution might help a child take their first class.

It might help a family continue lessons through a tricky season.

It might help us say “yes” to a child who is excited to learn, even when cost is a barrier.

That matters to us.

Why Donut Day?

Because it feels like the perfect place to begin.

Donut Day is joyful. It’s local. It’s easy to understand. It gives families a reason to stop by, meet us, and feel the warmth of the club.

It also gives us a chance to do something we hope becomes much bigger one day.

This year, we’re starting in Park Slope.

But someday, we’d love to see Story Time Chess clubs across the country celebrating National Donut Day in their own neighborhoods: partnering with local businesses, welcoming new families, sharing free first lessons, and helping more children access the magic of Story Time Chess.

For now, we’re starting here.

One club.
One neighborhood.
One very snack-happy king.

A note on transparency

We want to be very clear about how this works.

Story Time Chess is a for-profit company. Contributions are not tax-deductible and support reduced-cost Park Slope lessons.

The Park Slope Scholarship Fund is administered by Story Time Chess. It is not a separate nonprofit, foundation, or 501(c)(3).

Contributions to the fund will be used to support reduced-cost Story Time Chess lessons at our Park Slope Club. As the fund grows, we hope to help more families participate and share updates about the impact it is making.

We’re keeping this simple, local, and transparent as we begin.
