Chess Your Child Loves. Skills They’ll Use for Life.
Story Time Chess is a story-based chess program taught directly in schools. We transform the chessboard into a world of characters and adventures so children can understand the game quickly — and enjoy every minute of it.

Story Time Chess is offered directly at your child’s school as an enrichment program.

Backed by Science
You already know chess is good for kids. But here's what the research actually shows: children in chess programs outperform peers on math tests, develop stronger problem-solving skills, and build the kind of patience and focus that teachers notice in the classroom.
higher scores on standardized math tests
A meta-analysis of 24 studies confirmed that chess produces meaningful gains in children's cognitive ability and math achievement. NYC elementary students in chess programs outperformed their peers — and showed significant boosts in reading comprehension, too. Chess doesn't just teach strategy. It teaches kids how to think.

drop in conflicts among chess-playing students
A peer-reviewed study found that children in structured chess programs showed statistically significant improvements in self-esteem and measurable reductions in stress. Teachers in the NY School Chess Program reported a 60% drop in disciplinary incidents among participating students. Chess teaches kids to lose gracefully, win humbly, and regulate their emotions — one move at a time.

most effective activity for boosting originality in children
In a study comparing creativity-building activities — including creative writing and Dungeons & Dragons — chess ranked first for boosting original thinking in students. Children who received chess training also scored significantly higher on creative thinking assessments than those who didn't. Imagining every possible move turns out to be very good practice for imagining every possible solution.

The difference with Storytime Chess? Kids don't feel like they're learning. They feel like they're playing.
And that's exactly when the deepest learning happens.
Each class follows our proven four-part structure, designed to keep kids engaged, build skills progressively, and keep you in the loop every step of the way.

A new story from Chesslandia introduces a chess piece and its unique movement. Kids are captivated before they even touch the board.

Fun, movement-based activities reinforce what was just learned. Kids practice piece moves through games and physical activities — no sitting still required.

Students put their skills to the test in guided matches. Our educators are there to encourage and coach in real-time as kids discover the game.

After each class, families receive a Lesson Report so you know exactly what your child learned and how to continue the fun at home.
We tailor children's experience based on their ages and experience levels, but our curriculum covers the following concepts:

Children learn how each chess piece moves, one story at a time.

Children learn to use “Secret Missions” in the opening phase of a game.

We introduce piece point values to help children make in-game decisions.

Children learn attacking and defending tactics to use in the middle phase of a game.

Children learn official chess notation and how to write down their games.

Children learn to deliver checkmate and win the game!
Our team ensures safe, on-time transportation from school to club, giving you peace of mind every step of the way.

Schools and families can feel confident knowing each class is led by a trusted, qualified instructor who prioritizes safety, kindness, and an exceptional learning experience.

Chess is a powerful way for children to practice patience, self-control, and respect. Our classrooms are warm, encouraging, and structured so every child feels safe to learn and grow.
Our Expectations
We set clear, age-appropriate expectations from the very first class. Students are encouraged to:
Listen when others are speaking
Raise their hand to share
Take turns respectfully
Try their best — even when something feels challenging
Say “good game” at the end of every match
Redirecting Behavior
Young children are still learning emotional regulation. We see behavior as part of the learning process. When challenges arise, our educators:
Gently redirect with calm reminders
Reinforce positive choices
Offer structured guidance
Provide short breaks if needed
Model respectful communication
If a Child Is Struggling
We work step-by-step to support children who need extra help. Families may receive a brief check-in, a supportive email, or a collaborative plan. We may also make adjustments like:
Clearer structure
Strategic seating or pairing adjustments
Additional encouragement
Short goal-setting conversations
“At Story Time Chess, we believe character is built one small moment at a time.”
Every handshake. Every deep breath. Every “good game.”
That’s the real lesson.

“With the Story Time Chess Curriculum, students gravitate toward chess as a fun, wonderful activity that they want to do. Without realizing it, they are strengthening their mental capacity and problem-solving skills, which will help them in other subjects too.”

“Our overall school retention and occupancy efforts are enhanced by Story Time Chess’s highly engaging and fun program. It supports key learning objectives of our education program and helps strengthen our home-to-school connection.“
We keep you in the loop after every single class. No guessing what your child learned — just clear, friendly updates delivered straight to you.
After each class, you’ll receive a short, easy-to-read summary of what was covered, which chess piece or concept was introduced, and how your child engaged.
Each report includes easy tips so you can reinforce the lesson at home. Ask your child to show you how a piece moves — you’ll be amazed what they’ve learned!
If your child needs extra support, we proactively reach out to talk through it with you. Our classroom is positive, warm, and structured to help every child thrive.

What is Story Time Chess?
Story Time Chess is an award-winning chess curriculum designed specifically for young learners. We bring engaging, narrative-based chess instruction directly to your school as an enrichment or after-school program.
Who teaches the classes?
Our classes are taught by trained Story Time Chess coaches who specialize in making chess fun and accessible for children of all skill levels.
What ages or grades is the program designed for?
Our program is designed for students in grades K–5. Classes are structured to meet young learners where they are, with beginner-friendly lessons that grow in complexity over time.
Is chess experience required?
No experience is necessary! Our curriculum starts from the very basics, making it perfect for complete beginners. Experienced players are also welcome — we have ways to challenge advanced students.
What does a typical class look like?
Each session begins with a story or theme that introduces a new chess concept, followed by practice games and skill-building activities. Classes are structured, interactive, and always kid-friendly.
How does the chess curriculum progress?
Students begin with the foundational “story” lessons (each piece has a character!) and gradually learn how pieces move, how to capture, and how to develop strategies. Progress builds week by week.
Will my child actually learn chess, or is it just for fun?
Both! Our curriculum is designed so children genuinely learn chess — how to play, how to think ahead, and how to compete — while having a great time doing it. Many students go on to play in tournaments.
When do classes meet?
Classes typically meet once a week after school, on a day agreed upon with your school coordinator. Schedules vary by location and are confirmed before the session begins.
How long is each class session?
Sessions are 45–60 minutes, depending on the school’s schedule and available time slot.
How many weeks does the program run?
Program length varies by school and season, but most sessions run 8–12 weeks. The full schedule will be shared at enrollment.
Where can I find the class calendar?
Your enrollment confirmation email will include the class schedule. You can also log in to your account on our website to view upcoming dates.
What happens if my child misses a class?
We understand that things come up! While we don’t offer formal makeup sessions, coaches recap key concepts at the start of each class so students can catch up quickly.
What if class is cancelled due to a school holiday?
Story Time Chess follows the school calendar. If school is closed, class is cancelled. We do our best to communicate any schedule changes in advance.
Are there any refunds for missed classes?
We do not offer refunds or credits for individual missed classes. If Story Time Chess cancels a session, that class will either be rescheduled or prorated in your billing.
Where do students go after class?
Students are typically held in the classroom or a designated area until they are picked up. Your school coordinator will share the specific location for your school.
What is the pick-up procedure?
Pick-up procedures vary by school. Please follow your school’s standard after-school pick-up policy. Your coach will not release a child to anyone not listed as an authorized contact.
What if I’m running late to pick up my child?
Please notify the school office immediately if you are running late. Our coaches will stay with students until they are safely picked up, but repeated late pickups may affect your enrollment.
What if someone other than the parent is picking up?
Anyone picking up your child must be listed as an authorized pick-up contact in your enrollment profile. Please keep this information current and notify the school in advance of any changes.
How do I enroll my child?
You can enroll online through the Story Time Chess website. Select your school, choose the session, and complete the registration and payment steps. You’ll receive a confirmation email once your spot is secured.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept all major credit and debit cards through our secure online enrollment portal. Some schools may also accept payment through the school’s activity fund or PTA.
Is financial assistance available?
We believe every child deserves access to chess education. Please contact us directly to ask about scholarship opportunities or reduced-rate enrollment options at your school.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Cancellations made before the first class are eligible for a full refund. After the session begins, refunds are prorated based on remaining classes. Please contact us to request a cancellation.
Who do I contact with questions about my enrollment?
For enrollment questions, contact Story Time Chess directly through our website or email support. For school-specific questions (schedule, location, pickup), reach out to your school’s program coordinator.
How do I reach my child’s chess coach?
The best way to connect with your child’s coach is through the school coordinator, who can pass along messages or arrange a brief check-in before or after class.
I have a concern about my child’s experience. Who should I talk to?
We take parent feedback seriously. Please contact us through storytimechess.com and a member of our team will follow up with you promptly. For urgent matters, call the school office directly.
